1449期    2005-11-7至2005-11-13    發行人:何榮生     社    長:連瑞猛     總編輯:劉新華     主    編:張玉明     記    者:蔡秋鳳     神農子醫藥英語 介詞on四平八穩 ◎文／許松勇 介詞on的用法和其他介詞一樣，是不能隨便更動的。「上了電視」是on television，「上了廣播電台」是on radio，「上網」是on the internet,on the web,「上了電影」是on the movie. 例如「這真實的故事在電視、電台、網路、電影上公開。「The true story was made public on television, on radio, on the internet, on the web, and on the movie. 介詞on也用於表示「(一邊一國的)邊」，「一邊一國」是a separate nation on each side，「這一邊」是on this side，「那一邊」是on that side，「我們這邊」是on our side，「你們那邊」是on your side，「各方」是on all sides，「雙方」是on both sides. 「河邊」是on the riverside，on the bank of the river；「河的兩岸」是on both banks of the river，「河的南岸」是on the south bank of the river，「河的西岸」是on the west bank of the river. 「河的右岸」是on the right bank of the river，「河的左岸」是on the left bank of the river.「路邊」是on the road side，「行人道上」是on the side walk，「我的右邊」是on my right，「我的左邊」是on my left. 「東西南北」比較複雜，「東邊」(東之邊)是on the east，例如「台灣的東邊是太平洋」Taiwan faces the Pacific on the east.「某地以東」是to the east (of a place)，例如「龜山島位於宜蘭縣以東」The Turtle Mountain is lying to the east of Ilan County.「東部」是in the east，例如「花蓮位於台灣東部」Hualiang is located in the east of Taiwan. 故介詞on表示「接壤」之意，介詞to表示「某地之外的方向」，而介詞in則表示「某地之內的方向」，其他3個英文字west,south,north的用法和east相同。同理，「西邊」是on the west，「南邊」是on the south，「北邊」是on the north， 「以西」是to the west，「以南」是to the south，「以北」是to the north，「西部」是in the west，「南部」是in the south，「北部」是in the north.許多華人說中文時對這種區分不是很小心，但說英語時就得用字正確，老美才能聽懂你在講什麼。 介詞on又表示「進行中」之意，「正在路上」是on the way，例如「她正在來我們家的路上」She is on her way to our house.「值勤中」是on duty，「請假中」是on leave，「度假中」是on vacation，「行動中」是on the move，「(商品)減價中」是on sale，「講電話中」是on the phone，「節食中」是on diet，「服藥治療中」是on medications或on drugs，「旅行中」是on a trip或on a journey，「旅遊中」是on tour，「營業中」是on business，「(價格)上漲中」是(the price) on the increase.「(森林)大火中」是 (the forest is) on fire，「(此案)上訴中」是 (The case is) on appeal. On當副詞使用也表「進行中」之意，「繼續下去」是to go on，to move on，to carry on，例如「這裡發生了什麼事?」What is going on here? 「我們決定繼續下去」We decided to move on.或We decided to carry on. (= to continue).「進行中的專案」是the ongoing program.
